About my postcards

Back to History

The most fascinating and simultaneously most difficult thing about postcard collecting, so I`ve been told, is not to find some cards of the topic you are interested in but to find the perfect card. A card with no marks or writing on the front, a neat and clearly identifiable cancellation of its well placed stamp on the back - simply a card in no less than mint condition.

When I started out collecting postcards from the Skandinavien-Amerika Linie I quickly had to realize though that a used card, no matter where it was sent from or where it went, is likely never to live up to any expectation of perfection but sometimes tells a unique story of a bygone era when steamships provided the only connection between Europe and America.

Browsing my collection you will easily recognize that until today I actually haven`t been able to find such thing as a perfect card but instead some cards that unambiguously reflect the spirit of early transatlantic voyages. Though you may miss the sight of renowned three or four stackers, there is no doubt that you will certainly distinguish the pride of an ambitious and long-established Danish shipping line in its fleet which was famous all throughout Scandinavia.

I dedicate my homepage to this company which is still in business today, still flying the same flag and still reflecting the spirit of oceangoing experience:

Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab A/S, København, better known as DFDS.

Special thanks
Special contributions to Henrik from Copenhagen (I owe this page and the enthusiasm for postcard collecting to you) and my longterm pal Daniel from Leipzig (I`m sure you will appreciate the efforts displayed on these pages).

Final notes
Anyone interested in postcards from the Skandinavien-Amerika Linie is welcome to ask for doubles which I sometimes have. If you are interested, simply get in contact with me via email. I would of course on the other hand highly appreciate anyone getting in contact with me who is willing to offer further postcards to me than displayed on my homepage.
